The Federal Register is the U.S. government's official source of daily announcements. These include Federal agencies' and organizations' new and proposed rules and other notices, including grant announcements.The Register can appear intimidating but once you know your way around, you can complete a quick and effective search for the most current information available on government grants in your field. That know-how will save you time finding promising opportunities and give you extra time to prepare a competitive application.

Here is a quick walk-through of a search on the Federal Register. Let's assume you want to find recently announced grants in a particular field such as teaching. Here are your steps:

On the Federal Register main page, under the 2011 heading, you will see Quick Search and Advanced Search options; choose the Quick Search option for now. In the space provided, type in these words: "notice AND grants AND teaching" just as they are presented here. (The capital letters in between your search terms indicate that you want to see results that include all three of those words.) Click on the Submit button and you will receive a list of 2011 announcements that include your keywords. We recommend using the word "notice" as well as "grants" because a grant announcement is typically referred to as a "notice of funding availability."

You have three options for viewing your selected search results: HTML, PDF, or Summary. To do a quick check to see if the item is of interest, Summary is a good choice. For more detail and/or to save the file to your computer, choose either of the other two options.

Click on the resulting items that look most relevant to you (they will be listed in their order of relevance to your search terms). You will then see a description of the grant notice and, typically, important dates. Note that those dates may include not only when the grant was announced and when applications must be submitted, but in some cases also the deadline to file your intent to apply. That date can fall within just a few weeks of the announcement, so you can see how important it is to find grant opportunities quickly.

If you wish to narrow your time period to something like the past month, or announcements issued since you last did a search, choose the Advanced Search option. Here you can choose the Volume 2011), the Section (choose "Notices"), your Date Range or Specific Date (including the option of "before" or "after" a specific date), and your Search terms (e.g. "grant AND teaching"). Click Submit and you will get a new list for the time period you have specified.

A few extra tips: The capital letters we have indicated between search terms are called "Boolean operators." They are extremely useful and fortunately you only need to know a few of them. Use AND when you want results that contain multiple keywords or phrases. Use AND NOT when you want a particular word or phrase but not another specific term. Use OR when either of two words or phrases are acceptable; and use ADJ when you want to specify two words directly next to each other, such as "minority ADJ loans."

That's really all there is to it. If you run into any problems or want some extra help, take a look at the "search tips" provided on the Federal Register site. Try it out, experiment, and find the combination of keywords that gets you the best results. The time you save searching, combined with the time you gain for preparing your application, will put you way ahead of your competition.

Thankfully for the prospective nursing student, nursing is a field that has an abundance of scholarships and grants available. This article covers one specific avenue available to prospective nursing students and that is the nursing school scholarship. To begin, scholarships basically fall into three main categories: need-based, merit-based or what is referred to as "service-based".

Luckily there quite a few nursing school scholarships available. Government scholarship funding is generously allocated to nursing programs across the country. Nearly every state has some kind of grant or nursing school scholarship program available for prospective and continuing nursing students.

There is also an ample source of private foundations that offer one-time and continuing nursing school scholarships. Private and professional organizations often offer scholarship support as well. Even the five military branches offer scholarships for enlisted personnel (sometimes even their immediate families) who wish to obtain a degree in nursing.

Need-based Scholarships Need-based nursing scholarships are awarded based on the financial need of the prospective or continuing student or to members of social groups that have poor representation (in numbers of enrolled students) in colleges and universities. Some need-based scholarships focus on specific ethnic groups, such as Hispanic, Arabic, Japanese or African American. These nursing scholarships are also available to people with disabilities.

Merit-Based Scholarships Merit-based nursing scholarships are awarded by a either a college or university or sometimes a private group or foundation. These scholarships often require a lengthy essay or an in-person interview with their scholarship committee that is in charge of selecting the scholarship recipients. Prospective nursing students are often required to submit a reference letter from an employer or past (or current) teacher to the scholarship committee. Recipients are determined by the scholarship committee based on student's past and current academic achievements sometimes considering the student's participation in a type of community service.

Service-Based Scholarships The United States government often sponsors nursing scholarships to students. The U.S. government also has various nursing scholarships in the Veterans Affairs Health Careers and the National Health Service Corps. After graduation, recipients of nursing school scholarships are then required to fulfill their contract with the U.S. government and serve between two and eight years in one of the five military branches, depending on the agreed upon arrangement when the scholarship was obtained.

To get education grants, one of the basic criteria is to fill the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Education grants, for unemployed, minority communities and students from low income families, have helped many get a good education. Pell Grants

The maximum reward given under the Pell grants for students for the year 2010 - 2011 was USD 5,500. The Obama government has invested nearly 40 billion dollars in the federal Pell grants to help students, especially women. The Pell grants are mostly given for students looking to pursue undergraduate programs. Contact the financial aid office of your college for details about the participating institutes for this program. There are over 5,000 educational institutes who participate in the Pell Grants program.

SMART Grant

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART) is available for students in their third or fourth year of undergraduate study. To be eligible for this continuing education grant, you need to be atleast enrolled half time for an educational course. These grants do not apply for distance learning or online programs. This grant provides up to USD 4,000 to eligible students for each of the third and fourth year of study. The students are also required to maintain an accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.

TEACH Grant

It is one of the grants for teachers which gives up to USD 4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in schools serving students from low income families. After receiving this grant you are required to teach for at least 4 academic years over a period of 8 years in schools that serve students from low income families. If you fail to honor your commitment the grant amount will be turned in to an unsubsidized federal loan.

Academic Competitiveness Grant

This grant is given to the recipient of the Pell grant only if the combination of both these do not exceed the course fees. Under this grant, students are eligible for USD 750 for the first year of study and USD 1,300 for the second year of study. Like all other government grants you need to fill an application form and need to be a US citizen or eligible non citizen.

Education grants are helping students across America and it is advisable to apply for them, even if you think the process is complicated. A substantial amount out of the 275 billion dollars from the economic stimulus package is allocated for education grants. If you are planning for further education it would be wise to fill the FAFSA form.
